Since it is getting harder and harder to get good quality 35 mm film prints of comedy classics, we have had to book a number of the movies in this series in DVD format. We reserve the right to substitute a film listed in the brochure with another film.

BREAD AND TULIPS* — Italy, 2000 (112 min.) Dir.: Sylvio Soldini. With: Licia Maglietta, Bruno Ganz, Guiseppe Battiston. A woman is left behind at a rest stop by her extended family. On her way home she gives herself a little break in Venice where a whole new world opens up for her. October 24
THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY — U.S.A., 1955 (100 min.) DVD. Dir.: Alfred Hitchcock. With: John Forsythe, Edmund Gwen, Shirley MacLaine. Black comedy about a couple of neighbors, who because they believe they are implicated in a man’s death, conspire to hide the body.
SNATCH — U.K./U.S.A., 2000 (102 min.) Dir.: Guy Ritchie. With Jason Stathem, Stephen Graham, Alan Ford, Brad Pitt. A boxing promoter gets involved in fixing fights. Around the same time a jewel heist takes place and eventually the characters all get involved.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN — U.S.A., 1975 (105 min.) Dir.: Mel Brooks. With: Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Terry Garr, Madelaine Kahn. Story of Dr. Frankenstein’s descendent who inherits the castle of his infamous grandfather. Things get out of hand once he starts reading his grandfather’s journal.
BLUES BROTHERS — U.S.A., 1980 (132 min.) DVD. Dir.: John Landis. With: John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, John Candy, Carrie Fisher. Hilarious comedy about two musicians, who upon learning that the old orphanage where they grew up is about to be sold, get together to organize a fundraiser to pay for the unpaid taxes.

DR. STRANGELOVE — U.S.A., 1964 (93 min.) Dir.: Stanley Kubrick. With: Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott, Slim Pickens, Keenan Wynn. Black comedy about the dropping of the bomb. Peter Sellers plays a U.S. general, the U.S. President, and Dr. Strangelove.
WORKING GIRL — U.S.A., 1988 (120 min.) Dir.: Mike Nichols. With: Harrison Ford, Melanie Griffith, Sigourney Weaver. A secretary trying to make her way up the corporate ladder finds out that her boss is about to steal one of her ideas. While the boss is convalescing the secretary puts together a deal of her own.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY — U.S.A., 1989 (110 min.) Dir.: Rob Reiner. With: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher. Two long time acquaintances gradually warm to each other, and after much resistance fall in love.
TOOTSIE – U.S.A., 1982 (119 min.) DVD. Dir.: Sydney Pollack. With: Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray, Jessica Lange, Terri Garr. An out-of-work actor disguises himself as a woman to get a job, and ends on a popular soap opera. He ends up getting famous and falling for the leading actress on the series.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS — U.S.A., 1997 (138 min.) Dir.: James L. Brooks. With: Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear. A miserable curmudgeon without any good qualities meets up with a waitress working hard to care for her ailing son. Oscar winner for Best Actor and Best Actress.
A MIGHTY WIND — U.S.A., 2003 (91 min.) Dir.: Christopher Guest. With Jim Moret, Stuart Luce, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara. Mockumentary about the reunion of a 60’s folk trio who get together for a memorial concert to celebrate the life of their promoter.

NINE TO FIVE — U.S.A., 1980 (110 min.) Dir.: Colin Higgins. With: Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Lilly Tomlin, Dabney Coleman. Story of three female assistants who have finally had enough working for their sexist boss. They get their revenge by tying him up and then taking control of his department.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN — U.S.A., 1952 (103 min.) DVD. Dir.: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly. With: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds. A famous silent screen couple move to starring in a talking picture, but all is not well. A chorus girl is brought in and a new romance develops.
THANK YOU FOR SMOKING — U.S.A., 2005 (92 min.) Dir.: Jason Reitman. With: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, Cameron Bright. Satirical look at the tobacco industry where a lobbyist is responsible for promoting cigarette smoking. At the same time he tries to be true to his young son.

With: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Semi-autobiographical love story about a romantic neurotic comedian who breaks up with his girlfriend, and then tries to figure out what went wrong.
