In the Ottoman province of Hijaz during World War I, a young Bedouin boy experiences a greatly hastened coming-of-age as he embarks on a perilous desert journey to guide a British officer to his secret destination. Growing up poor in Madras, India, Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar earns admittance to Cambridge University during WWI, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy.

PHOENIX*. Germany/Poland, 2014 (drama-thriller, 98 min.) Dir.: Christian Petzold. With: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld. A disfigured Holocaust survivor in post-war Berlin sets out to determine if the man she loved betrayed her trust.

DHEEPAN*. France, 2015 (thriller, 115 min.) Dir.: Jacques Audiard. With: Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieasawari Srinivasan. Dheepan is a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior who flees to France with a wife and daughter he hardly knows and ends up working as a caretaker caught in another kind of war. Palme d’Or, Cannes 2015.

COMING HOME/GUI LAI*. China, 2014 (drama, 100 min.) Dir.: Yimou Zhang. With: Gong Li, Daoming Chen, Huiwen Zhang. Lu and Feng are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner during the Cultural Revolution. He finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife no longer remembers him.

JAFAR PANAHI’S TAXI*. Iran, 2015 (comedy-drama, 82 min.) Dir.: Jafar Panahi. With: Jafar Panahi. Banned from making movies by the Iranian government, director Jafar Panahi poses as a taxi driver to make a film about the social challenges in Iran. His passengers talk to him about their lives and his driving. Golden Bear Award, Berlin 2015.

YOUTH/LA GIOVINEZZA. Italy/France/Switzerland/UK, 2015 (comedydrama, 123 min.) Dir.: Paolo Sorrentino. With: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Jane Fonda. A retired orchestra conductor is on holiday with his daughter and his film director best friend in the Alps when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip’s birthday. Best Film European Film Award, 2015.

Lady Susan Vernon takes up temporary residence at her in-laws’ estate and, while there, is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica -- and herself too!

THE DARK HORSE. New Zealand, 2014 (drama, 124 min.) Dir.: James Napier Robertson. With: Cliff Curtis, James Rollerston, Kirk Torrance. The true story of a brilliant but troubled New Zealand chess champion who found purpose by teaching underprivileged children about the rules of chess while defying his brother’s biker gang.

In a remote Icelandic farming valley, two brothers who have not spoken to each other in forty years have to come together in order to save what is dearest to them - their sheep.

EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT/EL ABRAZO DE LA SERPIENTE*. Colombia/Venezuela/Argentina, 2015 (adventure-drama, 125 min.) Dir.: Ciro Guerra. With: Nilbio Torres, Jan Bijvoet, Antonio Bolivar. The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. Nominee Best Foreign Language Film Oscar 2016.

MY INTERNSHIP IN CANADA/GUIBORD S’EN VA-T-EN GUERRE*. Canada, 2015 (comedy, 108 min.) Dir.: Philippe Falardeau. With: Patrick Huard, Suzanne Clément, Clémence Dufresne-Desličres. An idealistic young Haitian travels to rural Quebec to work as an intern for an independent Member of Parliament who holds the tie-breaking vote during a national debate on Canada’s participation in a war.

SLEEPING GIANT. Canada, 2015 (comedy, 108 min.) Dir.: Andrew Cividino. W ith: Jackson Martin, Nick Serino, Erika Brodzky. While spending the summer in cottage country on the shores of Lake Superior, three teens cope with boredom by testing the limits of their experience.

SING STREET. Ireland/UK/USA, 2016 (musical drama, 106 min.) Dir.: John Carney. With: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle-Kennedy. A boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980s escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes.

SONG OF LAHORE*. Pakistan/US, 2015 (documentary-musical, 82 min.) Dir.: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Andy Schocken. A group of Pakistani musicians turn to jazz in order to survive the political and cultural turmoil in their country. Their efforts are rewarded when Wynton Marsalis invites them to play with his orchestra at Lincoln Centre.
